Legend has it that a young priest once confided in Padre Pio that he was struggling in his prayer life. He couldn't feel God and it was killing his vocation.
In response, Padre Pio asked him, “Who told you faith was a feeling?”
The question froze the priest. He wasn't sure what to think or say.
Padre Pio doubled down.
He told the priest that faith, like love, is a movement of the will. Faithfully loving is a responsibility that exists regardless of feelings.
The young priest later became a missionary and credited that moment with saving his vocation.
For me, the takeaway is, your feelings don't change the call.
That doesn't mean you should repress your emotions or invalidate them. But they also aren't meant to dictate the terms of your life.
When you don't feel like praying, pray anyway.
When you don't feel like running upstairs to grab your spouse something, grab it anyway.
When you don't feel like answering the 100th question from your child, answer it anyway.
When you don't feel like digging in and working hard for the day, work hard anyway.
